Napoli'nin Sırrı

Napoli velata

Movie · 2017 · 10 people

The Turkish-Italian director Ferzan Özpetek made the 2017 thriller Napoli velata (Naples in Veils in English, Napoli'nin Sırrı in Turkish). With a romantic streak, and also described as a giallo, it tells of a woman caught between an unexpected love and a committed crime. It opened in Italy on 28 December 2017 and in Turkey on 26 October 2018. It runs about 113 minutes.

The story centres on Adriana, a medical examiner in her forties working in Naples. At a party she meets Andrea, a younger, confident and charming man, and spends the night with him, convinced she has found love. When Andrea fails to show up for their meeting, she is crushed. Back at work, the body she must examine for an autopsy is the victim of a suspicious murder, and Adriana finds herself in the middle of a mysterious investigation. Giovanna Mezzogiorno stars, with Alessandro Borghi, Maria Pia Calzone, Luisa Ranieri, Anna Bonaiuto, Isabella Ferrari and Carmine Recano.

Özpetek wrote the screenplay with Gianni Romoli and Valia Santella; known for Karşı Pencere, Şahane Misafir and İstanbul Kırmızısı, he reunited with Mezzogiorno, who was in Karşı Pencere. The film opened the 40th Moscow International Film Festival and in 2018 was nominated in 11 categories at the David di Donatello awards, winning two.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Here Özpetek steps away from the emotional dramas he is best known for and moves towards the Italian giallo tradition. Joining a love story and a murder investigation in a single character is a bold structural choice: making Adriana a medical examiner lets desire and death share one axis. But the genre blend isn't always balanced; the film chases suspense at one moment and melancholy the next, and never fully ties the two tones together. Treating Naples as more than a backdrop, as a place veiled and full of secrets, is in my view the director's strongest suit. Eleven David di Donatello nominations show its craft was taken seriously. Reuniting with Giovanna Mezzogiorno after Karşı Pencere is an extra draw for anyone who follows Özpetek.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Mystery fans get a good hook: a story that starts as a romance and connects to a suspicious murder investigation is intriguing. But it doesn't move like a classic police thriller. The film spends a lot of time on mood and feeling, and the tension builds slowly. Patient viewers will be rewarded; anyone expecting action and speed may be disappointed.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This is not one to watch with children. The story involves a murder investigation that begins with an autopsy and a relationship between adults. Death, suspicion and passion dominate. Even with teenagers you should be choosy. It is more a mystery for adults to watch among themselves on a quiet evening.
