Les Misérables (Sefiller)

Les Misérables is a 1995 French drama film written, directed and produced by Claude Lelouch. A very loose adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic 1862 novel, it transposes the story from the 19th century to France in the first half of the 20th century, during World War II. Henri Fortin (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a poor and illiterate former boxer, agrees to smuggle a wealthy Jewish lawyer named Ziman and his family to Switzerland in his truck. As Ziman reads Hugo's novel to him along the journey, Fortin begins to see parallels between the hero Jean Valjean and his own life and the people they encounter.

Released in Turkey on 2 February 1996, the roughly three-hour film won the 1996 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for a BAFTA in the same category, while Annie Girardot received the César Award for Best Supporting Actress.
