Season's Beatings

Season's Beatings (original title La Bûche) is a 1999 French comedy-drama film. Directed by Danièle Thompson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Thompson, the roughly 106-minute production is counted among French cinema's Christmas-themed works.

The film follows a fractured family reuniting on Christmas Eve. Yvette, who has recently lost her second husband, tries to reconnect with her three daughters from her marriage to the gypsy violinist Stanislas — Louba, Sonia and Milla — while long-suppressed secrets and old resentments surface amid the holiday preparations. Tensions rise as the celebration coincides with the parents' wedding anniversary, yet the loss they share opens the door to an unexpected reconciliation. Blending humor with melancholy, the film examines family bonds. Alongside Françoise Brion, the cast features Sabine Azéma, Emmanuelle Béart and Charlotte Gainsbourg, and the film won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress.
