Melikshah (Melikşah) (translated)

Melikşah is a 1969 Turkish-Iranian co-production historical adventure directed by Esmail Koushan. The story follows Ali (Cüneyt Arkın), a young villager whose prize-winning horse from a javelin contest draws the wrath of the tyrannical governor Emir Tuğrul's men; after his grandfather is killed, Ali flees to the city with his mother. There he joins people who have suffered under Tuğrul's cruelty and tries to carry word of the injustice to Sultan Melikşah. His path crosses that of the sultan himself, who has secretly left the palace in plain clothes to investigate. Alongside the struggle against Tuğrul runs a romance between Ali and Zerrin, the governor's daughter, complicated by disguises and mistaken identities. In the end Melikşah is revealed to be Ali's long-lost father, Tuğrul is captured, and Ali is made governor and marries Zerrin.

Typical of the period's joint productions between Turkey and Iran, the film was made in both Turkish and Persian, with a cast combining performers from both cinemas, including Cihangir Gaffari, Niloofar, Gülsüm Kamu and Hulusi Kentmen.
