Mata Hari, agent H 21

This 1964 French-Italian spy drama recounts the story of Mata Hari, the celebrated First World War spy, played by Jeanne Moreau, with Jean-Louis Trintignant appearing as her lover. Rather than a strict biography, the screenplay draws on the rumours and legends that surrounded the Dutch dancer and alleged secret agent. Jean-Pierre Léaud and Albert Rémy are among the supporting cast.

Jean-Louis Richard directed the picture and co-wrote the script with François Truffaut, a collaboration that brings a flavour of the French New Wave to the espionage material. The production is also noted for its costumes, created by fashion designer Pierre Cardin. Blending documented history with the myths built up around its central figure, the film offers a stylised portrait of wartime intrigue and betrayal.
