Love Island

Love Island is a 2014 comedy film directed by Jasmila Žbanić, who co-wrote the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon; it has no connection to the television format of the same name. A co-production of Croatia, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Switzerland, the film follows the Grebo family on their summer holiday in Croatia: Dalila, her husband whom everyone calls Grebo, and their nine-year-old daughter Sanja unwind at a large hotel packed with tourists from across Europe, while tensions within the family begin to surface. Filming took place in Istria and on the island of Sveti Nikola, with support from Eurimages.

The film marked the first work by Žbanić, known for her war-themed cinema, to avoid the subject of conflict entirely. Its ensemble cast includes Ariane Labed, Ermin Bravo, Ada Condeescu, Franco Nero, Leon Lučev, and Branka Petrić. Poorly received by critics and later described as a misstep in the director's career, the film preceded her return to narratives about post-war Bosnia.
