Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment (Crime et Châtiment) is a 1956 French crime drama film freely adapted from Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1866 novel of the same name. Directed by Georges Lampin, the film was written by screenwriter Charles Spaak.

Premiering in France on 4 December 1956, it stars Jean Gabin, Robert Hossein, Marina Vlady and Lino Ventura. Running 107 minutes, the film stands out for its somber tone that exposes the dark underside of Parisian streets, at times devoting more attention to building its brooding atmosphere than to the characters' story itself.
