Trouble Maker (Baş Belası)

Movie · 1976 · 3 people

Atıf Yılmaz directed Baş Belası (Trouble Maker in English), a Turkish film from 1976. This colour production by Erler Film combines adventure, comedy and romance and runs about 85 minutes. The producers were Zlavko Kunkera and Türker İnanoğlu. Fuat Özlüer and Erdoğan Tünaş wrote the script and Çetin Gürtop was the cinematographer. Protection money, casinos, the mob and internal score-settling are the story's main ingredients.

One of the most feared names in the underworld, the "Baba" (Sadri Alışık), spreads terror through his territory and collects protection money by force. One day a shrewd fraudster appears who has learned their secret passwords and collects the money in their name: Rıza (Robert Widmark), an adventurous young glider enthusiast. The Baba tries every way to catch him but he slips away. Rıza meets Ayşe (Gülşen Bubikoğlu), a very beautiful young woman, and their relationship soon turns into love. On the day they decide to marry, he is taken home to be introduced and is shocked to find that Ayşe's father is the Baba who is looking for him everywhere. Meanwhile the Baba's second-in-command Bekir (Turgut Özatay) is making plans of his own to take his place.

Alberto Dell'Acqua, Humayun Tebrizyan and Süheyl Eğriboz are also in the cast.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Atıf Yılmaz behind the camera, Sadri Alışık and Gülşen Bubikoğlu together: an adventure comedy from one of Yeşilçam's sweeter periods. A feared 'Baba' who collects protection money, chasing a sly fraudster who collects it in his name, only to come face to face with his own daughter's love: it sets up the game of coincidence the old comedies adored very nicely. Sadri Alışık stepping into the role of a feared underworld boss is intriguing in itself for those who love him. Treating the tough-guy world so lightly may not sit well with everyone, but for anyone looking for an old film that makes you smile, it is a pleasant choice.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Adventure, comedy and romance in one. The daughter's sweetheart turning out to be the very fraudster her father is chasing is a fun comic idea. Still, the story is built on protection money, casinos and mob score-settling, and that may raise questions when watching with children. Light entertainment for teens and adults; for little ones the subject is a bit grown-up.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Protection money, casinos, the mob and a fraudster who is into gliders: good material for an adventure. The Baba trying every trick and still failing to catch Rıza promises a chase. But this is a comedy and a love story first; anyone expecting hard underworld tension may be let down. Fine if a light adventure is what you are after.
