Through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The series follows four young men who grew up in poverty and violence and who see football as a way to build a better life for themselves and their families. The fictional district of Ziyankâr can be read as a stand-in for the edge-of-the-city communities where opportunities are scarce. Football as a hope of social mobility is a familiar and fitting idea. Sets built in historic and authentic Istanbul districts also give the city real texture. The point to watch is how seriously a comedy-drama will take poverty and violence; the balance of tone is the show's real test.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

The first season reaching 20 episodes shows the series has found its place. A friendship among four mates, and the episodes where the rivals meet them, are the kind of material that works best in an ensemble show. The idea of a final match gives the story a clear goal; the real question is whether that goal stays fresh over 20 episodes. Turning points such as meeting the rivals and an event that upsets the neighbourhood are critical to keeping the pace up in the middle of a long season. It has the potential to be a solid ensemble series, and also the risk of a sagging middle.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

In a genre that swings between comedy and drama, the main issue is consistency of tone. Combining heavy material such as poverty, violence and a football dream with humour takes nerve, and since the creator and director are the same person, a single visual language is to be expected. A story driven by sport finds its pace easily through editing and shot choices, but anything leaning on one big event like a final match risks cliché. Making a rise-from-the-margins story likeable is easy; stepping outside the formula and giving the characters their own voice is what would set it apart.
