Hilmi Sözer — Biography

Hilmi Sözer was born on 9 March 1970 in Ankara and is a Turkish-German actor and comedian. His family emigrated from Ankara to Germany as guest workers in 1972. He finished basic schooling in 1990 in Tönisberg, a district of Kempen in North Rhine-Westphalia, then moved to Duisburg to train in theatre and acting. His film career began in 1994 with Voll Normaal, made with German comedian Tom Gerhardts, alongside Ballermann 6 and an adaptation of Dreck by Austrian writer Robert Schneider. Seeking to portray the lives of fourth-generation immigrants in Germany and explore Turkish-German culture, Sözer appeared in roughly 25 films between 1994 and 2007, and went on to appear in later productions such as Jerichow (2008), Brother and Sister (2016), The Tale of a Thousand and One Lives (2018), and It's for Your Own Good (2020).
