Aliye Rona — Biography

Born Aliye Dilligil in the Syrian town of Dera in 1921, Aliye Rona died in Istanbul on 27 August 1996. After training at a girls' vocational art school in Beyoğlu, she took up amateur theatre at the Kadıköy people's house before moving into film work in 1947. Over the following decades she appeared in more than 130 pictures, becoming one of Turkish cinema's busiest character actresses and earning particular recognition for her portrayals of stern, authoritative Anatolian mother and grandmother figures, in films such as Revenge of the Snakes, Cemo, Şabaniye and Berlin in Berlin. Her performances brought her repeated recognition for best supporting actress. She was the sister of actor and director Avni Dilligil and was married to fellow actor Zihni Rona.
