Zülfü Livaneli — Biography
Ömer Zülfü Livanelioğlu, better known as Zülfü Livaneli (born 20 June 1946 in Ilgın, Konya Province), is a Turkish composer, singer, writer, film director and politician. Imprisoned several times after the 1971 military memorandum for his political views, he left Turkey in 1972 and spent his exile years in Stockholm, Paris, Athens and New York before returning in 1984.
He has composed more than three hundred songs and the scores of over thirty films, including Yol, Sürü and Hazal, and won the best composer award at the 1999 Sanremo festival. As a director, Yer Demir Gök Bakır (1987) took the best foreign film prize at San Sebastián, while Sis (1988) earned him the best director award at the Valencia festival.
His books have been translated into 37 languages; the novel Mutluluk (2002) was adapted into a film, Son Ada won the Orhan Kemal Novel Award, and Serenad (2011) reached a wide readership. UNESCO named him a Goodwill Ambassador in 1995; he resigned in 2016. He also served as a CHP member of the Turkish parliament between 2002 and 2006.
