Zeki Demirkubuz — Biography

Zeki Demirkubuz was born in 1964 in Isparta; he finished middle school there and moved to İstanbul, dropping out of high school after one term to work in factories. After the 1980 coup he was arrested, imprisoned three years, and tortured; he read Dostoevsky in this period, and Crime and Punishment left a lasting mark. He worked as a street vendor, finished high school externally to defer military service, and entered İstanbul University's Faculty of Communication.

He entered film in 1986 as Zeki Ökten's assistant until his first feature, C Blok (1994), then went independent via his own company, Mavi Film. Masumiyet (1997), shown at Venice, brought recognition; Üçüncü Sayfa (1998) screened at Locarno and Rotterdam. His trilogy Karanlık Üzerine Öyküler opened with Yazgı and İtiraf at Cannes' Un Certain Regard (2002) and closed with Bekleme Odası (2003), in which he also starred.

Kader (2006), a backstory to Masumiyet, won Best Film at the Golden Orange Festival; Kıskanmak (2009), Yeraltı (2012), Bulantı (2015), Kor (2016) and Hayat (2023) followed. He has also acted, in Kemal Sunal's Yoksul (1986) and several of his own films.

A Beşiktaş fan whose favorite footballer is İlhan Mansız, Demirkubuz names Yılmaz Güney his favorite director; in 2025-26 he opened his first photography show, 78 images on loneliness.
