A Swann love (Un amour de Swann) (translated)
Directed by Volker Schlöndorff, this 1984 French-German drama adapts the self-contained section of Marcel Proust's first volume of In Search of Lost Time, commonly known as Swann's Way. The story follows Charles Swann, a wealthy and cultivated man who has carved out a place for himself in Parisian high society.
Swann falls under the spell of Odette de Crécy, an alluring woman accustomed to using men for money and status. His attachment to her hardens into obsession, and by the time he realizes that what he calls love is closer to jealousy-fueled desire, it is too late. Odette's past threatens his social standing and friendships, forcing him toward a decisive choice.
Jeremy Irons stars as Swann, with Ornella Muti as Odette and Alain Delon as Baron de Charlus. The screenplay, written by Jean-Claude Carrière and Peter Brook, earned the film two BAFTA Film Award nominations.
