Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train

Released in 1998, the French drama Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train (Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train) was helmed by Patrice Chéreau, who also co-wrote the script with Danièle Thompson and Pierre Trividic. The story follows roughly fifteen mourners who travel together by train to attend the funeral of a painter, and over the course of a single day their old rivalries, buried resentments and unresolved romances resurface around the coffin. The ensemble cast includes Jean-Louis Trintignant and Vincent Perez alongside Pascal Greggory, Charles Berling and Dominique Blanc. The picture competed for the Palme d'Or in the main selection at Cannes and later received eleven César nominations, winning three awards including best director and best cinematography. Its soundtrack mixes contemporary artists such as Björk and Portishead with classical pieces by Gustav Mahler, giving the funeral-day drama an unusual musical backdrop.
