The Unvanquished (L'Insoumis)
French-Italian film noir The Unvanquished (French original L'Insoumis) dates from 1964 and was directed by Alain Cavalier. Running about 100 minutes, it unfolds in the shadow of the Algerian War and blends crime and drama. It is also known as Il ribelle di Algeri and Have I the Right to Kill?. Alain Delon stars opposite Lea Massari.
Delon plays Thomas Vlassenroot, a deserter from the French Foreign Legion in Algeria during the 1961 uprising. A former lieutenant now working for the OAS suggests he kidnap the lawyer Dominique Servet (Massari), and Thomas agrees. Caught giving the captive water, he shoots his way out of a clash with his OAS associates and goes on the run, and his former partners start hunting the pair. The cast also includes Georges Géret, Maurice Garrel, Robert Castel and Laure Paillette.
Cavalier wrote the screenplay. It was inspired by the kidnapping of Mireille Glaymann, a 26-year-old French lawyer seized by the OAS in Algeria in January 1962 and freed after four days by one of her captors. The shoot was not a smooth experience: Delon suffered physical injuries, the censors insisted on cuts that compromised the film's artistic integrity, and French audiences received it poorly, put off by its pro-Algerian theme.
