The Big Gundown (La resa dei conti)

Sergio Sollima directed The Big Gundown, a spaghetti Western co-produced by Italy and Spain and dating from 1966-1967. In Italian it is called La resa dei conti, "The Settling of Scores". Lee Van Cleef and Tomas Milian share the leading roles, and Sollima wrote the screenplay with Sergio Donati. It is known in France as Colorado, in Germany as Der Gehetzte der Sierra Madre, in Spain as El halcón y la presa, in Brazil as O Dia da Desforra and in Portugal as O Grande Pistoleiro. The film is in Italian and runs about 110 minutes.

The story follows the bounty hunter Jonathan Corbett as he tracks down Cuchillo, a Mexican fugitive accused of a horrific crime against a young girl; Cuchillo is played by Tomas Milian. As the chase goes on, Corbett begins to suspect that the respectable, powerful men who hired him are hiding the real guilt. The cast also includes Fernando Sancho, Luisa Rivelli, Nieves Navarro, Gérard Herter, Romano Puppo, Antonio Casas, Benito Stefanelli and Nello Pazzafini.

The picture is regarded as Sollima's best-known film and one of the most popular entries in the spaghetti Western genre. It opens Sollima's "trilogy" of Westerns in which Milian recurs, and Milian returns as Cuchillo in the director's 1968 film Run, Man, Run.
