Il Postino: The Postman (Postacı)

Directed by Michael Radford, Il Postino: The Postman is a 1994 French-Belgian-Italian comedy-drama adapted from Antonio Skármeta's novel Ardiente paciencia. It tells the fictional story of exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret), who forms a warm friendship with Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi), the simple postman who delivers his mail by bicycle on a small Italian island and gradually learns to love poetry, using it to win the heart of the beautiful Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta). The setting was moved from 1970s Chile to 1950s Italy, with filming on the islands of Procida and Salina.

The screenplay was written by Radford, Troisi, Anna Pavignano, Furio Scarpelli and Giacomo Scarpelli. Troisi postponed heart surgery to finish the film and died of a heart attack shortly after filming ended; the film is dedicated to him. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, it won the Oscar for Luis Bacalov's original dramatic score and three BAFTA Awards.
