Directed by Yves Boisset, Plot (original title L'Attentat) is a 1972 French-Italian-German political thriller inspired by the 1965 disappearance of Moroccan opposition leader Mehdi Ben Barka in Paris. In the film, French and American intelligence services plotting to eliminate Sadiel, an exiled Arab opposition leader, manipulate left-wing intellectual François Darien — who enjoys Sadiel's trust — into becoming an unwitting cog in their conspiracy.

Starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Gian Maria Volonté, Michel Piccoli and Jean Seberg, the film echoes real-life speculation about collusion between French police, Moroccan agents and the CIA. Despite pressure on the crew during filming, it became a commercial success, won the Silver Prize at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival in 1973, and was released in the United States as The French Conspiracy.
