The Leopard (Leopar)

Directed by Luchino Visconti and released in 1963, The Leopard is an Italian-French epic historical drama adapted from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's celebrated 1958 novel. Set in Sicily during the Risorgimento of the 1860s, the story unfolds through the eyes of Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina (Burt Lancaster), an aging aristocrat who watches the old feudal order crumble as Italy unifies and the bourgeoisie rises to power. His ambitious nephew Tancredi (Alain Delon) adapts to the new era by marrying Angelica (Claudia Cardinale), the daughter of a wealthy merchant, while the prince himself comes to terms with his class's inevitable decline during a magnificent ball sequence. An international co-production between Titanus and Pathé, the film won the Palme d'Or at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival and earned an Academy Award nomination for costume design. Though initially received coolly in the United States in a shortened dubbed version, the full cut is now regarded as one of the greatest achievements in cinema history.
