Claude Pinoteau directed the 1980 French teen romantic comedy La Boum and wrote it with Danièle Thompson. Counted among the first youth films of its time, it was Sophie Marceau's screen debut and introduced her to a wide audience. A social phenomenon in France, it drew more than 4.3 million admissions there and about 15 million across Europe. Its English titles are The Party and Ready for Love, and in Turkey it is also known as Patlarsam Yanarsın.

The story centres on thirteen-year-old Vic Beretton (Sophie Marceau) as she enters adolescence. Her parents, François (Claude Brasseur) and Françoise (Brigitte Fossey), have a troubled marriage. Starting at a new high school, she looks forward to new friends and wild parties and feels her first love. When school anxieties merge with tension at home she looks for support and turns to her eccentric grandmother Poupette (Denise Grey). Alexandre Sterling, Bernard Giraudeau and Richard Bohringer also appear.

Vladimir Cosma composed the music, and the song "Reality", sung by Richard Sanderson, became inseparable from the film. Marcel Dassault was among the producers, and Gaumont produced. It opened in France on 17 December 1980 and in Germany on 11 December 1981. A sequel, La Boum 2, followed in 1982.
