Newt Arnold directed Bloodsport (Kansporu in Turkish), a 1988 American martial arts film built around an underground tournament called the Kumite. Cannon Films released it on 26 February 1988. Critics were unkind, yet it earned far more than its 1.5 to 2.3 million dollar budget and grew into a cult favourite.

The story follows Frank Dux, a US Army captain who practises ninjutsu. To honour his dying master he decides to enter the Kumite, a secret, no-limits tournament held in Hong Kong every five years. With government agents on his trail, he fights his way towards the undefeated champion Chong Li. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Dux and Bolo Yeung plays Chong Li, with Donald Gibb as Ray Jackson, Leah Ayres, Forest Whitaker as Rawlins, Roy Chiao and Cihangir Gaffari also in the cast. It was Van Damme's first lead, showing off moves such as the helicopter kick and a full split.

Sheldon Lettich and Christopher Cosby wrote the screenplay from Dux's claims, first covered in a martial arts magazine in November 1980. The film was marketed as a true story, and Dux worked as fight choreographer and technical adviser. Many of his claims were later disputed, and Lettich himself denied the Kumite existed. Menahem Golan, Yoram Globus and Mark DiSalle produced.
