Joan of Arcadia
Barbara Hall created the American fantasy family drama Joan of Arcadia. It aired on CBS on Friday evenings from 26 September 2003 to 22 April 2005, running for two seasons and 45 episodes. Its title alludes to Joan of Arc, the French heroine who heard a divine calling. Critics praised it; it won the Humanitas Prize and the People's Choice Award and earned a first-season Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.
The story is set in the fictional town of Arcadia, Maryland. Amber Tamblyn plays Joan Girardi, an ordinary high-school student who is approached one day by another teenager claiming to be God. From then on God appears to her in a different body each time, as a classmate or stranger, and gives her missions. The tasks seem confusing at first but have unexpected effects on those around her. Joe Mantegna and Mary Steenburgen play Joan's parents; Jason Ritter, Michael Welch, Chris Marquette, Becky Wahlstrom and Aaron Himelstein also appear.
The show drew more than 10 million viewers in its first year; in the second season the audience fell below 8 million, and CBS cancelled it on 18 May 2005. In France it aired from 8 September 2004 on 13ème rue and from 27 August 2005 on TF1.
