Germany 09 (Deutschland 09)

Thirteen short films, each by a different director, make up Germany 09 (original title Deutschland 09 – 13 kurze Filme zur Lage der Nation), a 2009 German anthology that takes many voices to look at the state of the country at the time. The project was known as the "big undertaking of the German directing elite" even before it was made; started by Tom Tykwer, it is seen as a sequel to the 1977 collective film Deutschland im Herbst (Germany in Autumn). Its running time is 152 minutes.

In Tykwer's words, the idea is to gather a good dozen personal views of what we experience today as "home" and of how people place themselves, lose their way and become entangled in this country. The directors include Fatih Akın, Wolfgang Becker, Sylke Enders, Dominik Graf, Martin Gressmann, Christoph Hochhäusler, Romuald Karmakar, Nicolette Krebitz, Dani Levy, Angela Schanelec, Hans Steinbichler, Isabelle Stever, Tom Tykwer and Hans Weingartner. Among the actors are Denis Moschitto and Karl Markovics.

The film premiered on 13 February 2009 in the sidebar programme of the 59th Berlinale. The 1977 anthology that inspired it had eleven directors, among them Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Edgar Reitz and Volker Schlöndorff; the 2009 film asks the same question again after thirty years of German history.
