Darling (Canısı) (translated)

Movie · 1997 · 1 people

Canısı is a 1997 Turkish television film directed by Temel Gürsu, written by Arda Uskan and produced by Gold Film for Star TV. The project grew out of the song of the same name from singer İbrahim Erkal's 1996 album Gönlünüze Talibim, whose popularity the channel wanted to carry onto the screen.

The story follows İbrahim, a poor young man, and his fiancée Mine, whose love is driven toward tragedy by the class barriers standing between them. Erkal took the leading role, making his acting debut, alongside Emine Ün, Murat Soydan, Selen Yıldız, Engin Koç, Müge Oruçkaptan and Yılmaz Köksal.

First broadcast on 21 June 1997, the film topped that evening's ratings, even outperforming live sports coverage. Its remarkable success led Show TV to reach an agreement with Gold Film to continue the story as a series with the same cast, and the film is remembered among the notable Turkish TV productions of the 1990s.
