Bunker Palace Hôtel is a 1989 French science fiction film marking the feature directing debut of comics artist Enki Bilal, who shared screenwriting duties with Pierre Christin. The story takes place in a grim future in which warfare has ravaged the surface, forcing the nation's ruling elite to seal themselves inside a lavish subterranean refuge known as the Bunker Palace. A young spy called Clara is dispatched to penetrate this enclosed world and observe its residents. As power struggles, dread and moral rot intensify behind the walls, the shelter becomes a stifling mirror of the disintegrating society above. The ensemble features Jean-Louis Trintignant, Carole Bouquet, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Maria Schneider, Benoît Régent and Mira Furlan. Shot partly in Belgrade with Yugoslav performers among the supporting cast, the film translates the somber visual style and grotesque figures of Bilal's graphic novels into live action.
