Attack of the Robots

Attack of the Robots (original title: Cartas boca arriba) is a 1966 Spanish-French co-production spy film directed by Jesús Franco and written by Jean-Claude Carrière. Blending crime, comedy and science fiction elements, the film stars Eddie Constantine as Al Pereira, a spy called out of retirement to investigate a series of murders carried out by a robot-like army of people wearing black-framed glasses, with Françoise Brion, Fernando Rey and Sophie Hardy also among the cast.

The film was produced by Madrid-based Hesperia Film together with Paris-based Cine Alliance and Spéva Films, and marked the final collaboration between Carrière and Franco. The pair played against Constantine's established screen persona, turning his character into a more clumsy spy. Released in France and Spain in 1966, the film proved a commercial success in Spain; while Spanish newspaper reviews were generally positive, some film magazines reacted unfavourably.
