Amar en tiempos revueltos

Amar en tiempos revueltos

TV Series · 2005–2012 · 4 people

Produced by Diagonal TV for RTVE and shown on weekday afternoons on La 1, the Spanish period soap opera Amar en tiempos revueltos ("Love in Troubled Times") was a long-running one. It premiered on 27 September 2005 and ended on 16 November 2012, seven seasons and 1,707 episodes later, plus eight specials and one recap. It won several Actors and Actresses Union Awards in Spain and a silver medal at the New York Festival.

The story is set just after the Spanish Civil War and in the early years of General Francisco Franco's regime. It was inspired by the Catalan channel TV3's Temps de silenci. The cast included Inma Cuesta, Álex García Fernández, Verónika Moral and Jaime Menéndez Lorente, with Ana Turpin, Rodolfo Sancho, Ágata Lys and Félix Gómez among others.

Josep Maria Benet i Jornet created the show, with Antonio Onetti and Rodolf Sirera on the writing team; Orestes Lara and Joan Noguera were among the directors. When RTVE's financial problems stopped it ordering an eighth season, Diagonal TV began talks with other channels. That ended the series and led to the sequel Amar es para siempre on Antena 3 in January 2013. La 1 briefly reran the show in summer 2014 but dropped it for low ratings.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Seven seasons, 1,707 episodes: Amar en tiempos revueltos is a true marathon. As a soap that aired every weekday, its pace is nothing like a weekly drama; the story flows slowly and the characters stretch across years. That lets you build a deep bond with them, but you have to accept from the start that some stretches will drag on and on. Names like Inma Cuesta, Rodolfo Sancho and Félix Gómez make the cast appealing. This award-backed period drama suits patient viewers, not binge sprinters.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

A soap opera set just after the Spanish Civil War and in the early years of Franco's regime looks like an odd combination at first. Yet a society divided by the war makes a powerful backdrop for everyday stories of love and family. That the series was inspired by a Catalan production and made for the public broadcaster RTVE can be read as a sign of Spain's wish to look at its recent past through television. For Turkish viewers, too, it is an interesting window onto daily life in a post-civil-war society. And the fact that its end came down to the broadcaster's financial troubles is a reminder of how fragile public broadcasting can be.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This show aired in the afternoon slot, so it is the kind of soap you can comfortably watch with the older folks at home. It is built on love, family and hard times. Because it is set after a war, though, some topics may be heavy and need explaining to young children. The episode count is huge too: a full 1,707 episodes. Ideal for grandparents who like a little every day, not for anyone hoping to finish it quickly.
