Füruzan — Biography

Füruzan, born Feruze Çerçi on 29 October 1932 in Istanbul and who died there on 11 February 2024, was a self-taught Turkish writer, screenwriter and film director also known by her married name, Füruzan Selçuk.

One of the leading figures of contemporary Turkish literature, she gave voice to the inner lives of society's overlooked "small people" and to Turkish emigrants living abroad, working across short fiction, poetry, the novel, travel writing, essays and children's literature; several of her stories were later adapted for the stage and screen. Her politically attentive writing of the 1970s places her alongside Sevgi Soysal and Adalet Ağaoğlu among the era's most notable women authors.

Füruzan also directed the film Benim Sinemalarım (My Cinemas), widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed works in Turkish cinema history, on which her daughter Aslı Selçuk served as assistant director.
