Fatih Akın — Biography

Fatih Akın was born on 25 August 1973 in Hamburg to a Turkish family with roots in the Black Sea town of Sürmene, and studied visual communication at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. His 1995 short film Sensin! (That's You!) won the audience award at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival, and he made his feature debut in 1998 with Short Sharp Shock (Kısa ve Acısız).

Akın won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004 for Head-On (Gegen die Wand), making it the first time in forty years that a Turkish-related production had taken the award. He went on to win Best Screenplay at Cannes in 2007 for The Edge of Heaven (Auf der anderen Seite), the Grand Jury Prize in Venice in 2009 for Soul Kitchen, and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2018 for In the Fade (Aus dem Nichts).

His filmography ranges from the historical drama The Cut (2014) to Amrum, a coming-of-age story set in 1945 Germany that premiered at Cannes in 2025. Akın also owns the production company Corazón International and occasionally takes on small acting roles in his own films.
