Young Sinners

Young Sinners (Les Tricheurs) is a 1958 French-Italian film directed by Marcel Carné. The picture offers a portrait of the era's youth, following the everyday lives of a group of fairly well-off young Parisians at the end of the 1950s, moving between the Left Bank around Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Right Bank's 16th arrondissement. Although Carné was already past fifty when he made it, the film anticipated the New Wave through its subject matter. Its ensemble of young performers included actors who would become major stars in the following decade, among them Jean-Paul Belmondo, who appears here in one of his earliest roles. The film was a huge box office success in France, drawing close to five million admissions, and also performed strongly in Italy.
