Three Colours: Red (Trois couleurs: Rouge)
Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski made Three Colours: Red (Trois Couleurs: Rouge) in 1994, a romantic mystery drama that closes his Three Colours trilogy, named for the colours of the French flag. The trilogy explores the ideals of the French Revolution, and red stands for fraternity. A French-language co-production of France, Poland and Switzerland, it won enthusiastic reviews, earned three Academy Award nominations, and is often counted among the finest films ever made.
Set in Geneva, the story begins when Valentine, a student and part-time model, accidentally injures a dog and meets its owner, the retired judge Joseph Kern, who listens in on his neighbours' phone calls. Irène Jacob plays Valentine and Jean-Louis Trintignant the judge, with Jean-Pierre Lorit as Auguste and Frédérique Feder as Karin. The film traces a bond between two people with little in common, and lives that slowly intertwine. A law student whose path echoes the judge's runs alongside.
Kieślowski wrote the screenplay with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and Zbigniew Preisner composed the score. Kieślowski called it his last film and died suddenly in 1996. It was chosen as Switzerland's Oscar entry but disqualified for not being a majority-Swiss production; its three nominations included Best Director.
