The Plague

The Plague, originally titled La Peste, is a 1992 Argentine-French-British drama film adapted from Albert Camus' novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Luis Puenzo and entered the competition at the 49th Venice International Film Festival.

Rather than the 1940s Algeria of the novel, the story is transposed to the fictional South American city of Oran in the 1990s. As plague cases begin to mount, authorities attempt to hide the epidemic from the public, but word spreads quickly; the army seals the city under quarantine, cutting off all entry and exit. At the heart of the narrative stands Dr. Bernard Rieux, who fights the disease.

The film stars William Hurt, Sandrine Bonnaire, Robert Duvall and Raul Julia, with Jean-Marc Barr appearing as Jean Tarrou. Vangelis composed the score.
