Tehran Taboo
Tehran Taboo is a 2017 Persian-language adult animated drama film written and directed by Ali Soozandeh, produced as a German-Austrian co-production. Made with the rotoscoping technique, the film features real actors shot against green screens, with Tehran settings combining traditional drawings and digital imagery added afterwards. It follows the intersecting stories of three young women and a male musician in a city full of prohibitions, portraying characters who, in their search for freedom and happiness, collide with Iran's strict religious laws and the resulting double standards — a struggle told largely through the position of women in society and their restricted sexual lives.
The film had its world premiere on 20 May 2017 in the Critics' Week section of the Cannes Film Festival, opened in Germany on 16 November and in Austria on 30 November 2017, and was released in the United States in February 2018.
