She Is Conann

She Is Conann is a 2023 film written and directed by Bertrand Mandico and produced by Ecce Films as a co-production between France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Blending speculative fiction, action, drama, and fantasy, the multilingual film uses French, German, and English. It offers a loose, feminist reworking of the Conan character created by Robert E. Howard in 1932.

The narrative unfolds as vignettes spanning the life of its heroine, Conann, who is played by a different actress at each age: Claire Duburcq at 15, Christa Théret at 25, Sandra Parfait at 35, Agata Buzek at 45, and Nathalie Richard at 55. Elina Löwensohn appears as Rainer, the filmmaker who narrates the story, while Julia Riedler plays Sanja, Conann's lover. The film premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Queer Palm.
