TV Series · 2023–2024 · 15 people

Shot in Cappadocia, the Turkish family drama Safir (Sapphire) began its run on ATV on 4 September 2023. Burcu Över wrote the series, Semih Bağcı directed it and NTC Medya produced it. The series ended after a single season of 26 episodes, with the last aired on 26 February 2024. It was nominated for Best Telenovela at the 2024 International Emmy Awards.

The story follows the Gülsoy family, one of the leading families of Cappadocia. Ateş (İlhan Şen), the eldest son, left home years ago because he would not bow to the overwhelming authority of his grandfather Ömer. At the request of his mother Gülfem he returns from America with his brothers Yaman (Burak Berkay Akgül) and Okan to take over and expand the family business. After his brother's return, Yaman decides to propose to his sweetheart Feraye (Özge Yağız), using the family's heirloom sapphire ring, bought secretly from his mother as a child. While the couple count the days to their wedding, a tragedy upsets every balance. Feraye and Yaman are drawn onto dangerous paths of love, revenge and tyranny, while Ateş makes enemies and clashes with his brothers over the radical decisions he takes to protect his family.

Gizem Karaca and Erkan Bektaş, as Vural Bakırcıoğlu, are also in the cast.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Safir did something unusual for viewers used to long-running dramas: it wrapped up in a single season. There is an upside, since the story ends before it gets watered down; but with so many ingredients thrown together, love, passion, revenge and bullying, I think some character arcs close before they fully mature. The tension between the brothers that begins with Ateş's return is the show's strongest vein. Its International Emmy nomination in the telenovela category is also a good pointer for fans of the genre.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Socially, the show's most interesting question is who holds authority in one of Cappadocia's leading families. The grandson who refused to bow to grandfather Ömer's crushing authority and left home returns from America years later, ready to take over the family company. It is a setup that captures well how painful the handover of power between generations can be in old provincial families. Carrying a family heirloom ring into a marriage proposal is also a reminder that inheritance is not only property but expectation and burden. Yet the series often leaves these themes buried under the noise of melodrama.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

With its Cappadocia setting and family story, it looks at first like a series for the whole household. But the plot involves tragedy, revenge and bullying, and some episodes may be heavy for small children. Better watched with teenagers, alongside their parents. It gives a family plenty to talk about.
