Napoléon is a four-part historical miniseries from 2002, directed by Yves Simoneau and drawn from Max Gallo's biography of Napoleon Bonaparte. The story traces the general's path from seizing power in the coup of 18 Brumaire, through his proclamation as emperor in 1804, to his final downfall at Waterloo and his death in exile. Along the way it depicts both the triumphs and disasters of his campaigns, from Arcole and the Egyptian expedition to Austerlitz, Eylau, the catastrophic Russian campaign and Waterloo, while also portraying his turbulent private life: his marriage to and divorce from Joséphine de Beauharnais, his second marriage to Marie Louise of Austria, and his affairs with Eleanore Denuelle and Marie Walewska. Christian Clavier plays Napoleon, supported by an international cast including Gérard Depardieu as police minister Fouché, Isabella Rossellini as Joséphine and John Malkovich. Produced at a cost of roughly 46 million US dollars, it was the most expensive European television miniseries of its era. It debuted on France 2 on 7 October 2002 and received the 2003 Emmy Award for its costumes.
