Mr. Freedom

Mr. Freedom is a 1969 French satirical film written and directed by William Klein, an American photographer and filmmaker living abroad. Framed as an anti-imperialist farce, it follows the white nationalist superhero Mr. Freedom (John Abbey) and his sidekick Marie-Madeleine (Delphine Seyrig) as they set out to stop a supposed Communist takeover of France. Along the way, the pair must also uncover who killed the French superhero Capitaine Formidable. Beyond Seyrig, the picture includes appearances by well-known entertainers such as Serge Gainsbourg, who also composed its score, alongside Donald Pleasence, Philippe Noiret, Yves Montand and Simone Signoret. Blending comic-book imagery with political mockery, the film takes aim at American imperialism and its cultural exports.
