Le bourgeois gentilhomme

Le bourgeois gentilhomme is a French comedy film directed by Roger Coggio, released in 1982. It adapts Molière's celebrated 1670 comédie-ballet of the same name. The story follows Monsieur Jourdain, a wealthy merchant whose obsession with rising into the nobility drives the entire plot. Determined to acquire aristocratic polish, he hires tutors in philosophy, music, dancing and fencing, only to make himself ridiculous in every lesson. When his daughter Lucile wishes to marry the young bourgeois Cléonte, Jourdain refuses, since the suitor is no gentleman. Cléonte and his servant Covielle exploit the old man's vanity by staging a fake ceremony in which a supposed Turkish delegation elevates Jourdain to an exotic rank, allowing the disguised lover to ask for Lucile's hand. The cast includes Jean-Pierre Darras and Michel Galabru, alongside Ludmila Mikaël, Didier Bourdon and Étienne Chicot, bringing Molière's satire of social climbing and self-delusion to the screen.
