Il coltello di ghiaccio (Knife of Ice) is a 1972 Italian-Spanish giallo film co-written and directed by Umberto Lenzi, starring Carroll Baker, Evelyn Stewart (Ida Galli) and George Rigaud. The story centers on a young mute woman living in the Spanish countryside who becomes a target after a serial killer begins striking in the area. Unable to speak about what she has witnessed, she finds herself dangerously isolated as suspicion and fear close in around her. The title refers to a quotation attributed to Edgar Allan Poe describing fear as a knife of ice that pierces the senses to the depths of conscience, though the saying was actually invented by the filmmakers. The picture was the fourth and final collaboration between Baker and Lenzi, following So Sweet... So Perverse, Orgasmo and A Quiet Place to Kill. Critics have pointed out that aspects of its script and direction recall the work of fellow Italian genre director Lucio Fulci, and it has been recommended as a rewarding watch for devotees of the giallo tradition.
