Hostage
Konstantinos Giannaris wrote and directed Hostage (original title Omiros; also known in Turkey as Eve Dönerken), a 2005 Greek drama and crime film. It is a Greek-Turkish co-production, shot in Greek and running about 105 minutes, and it opened on 8 July 2005. According to Giannaris, the starting point was the 1999 bus hijacking in Northern Greece and the death of Giorgos Kouloúris.
A man of Albanian origin boards an intercity bus and takes everyone hostage with an automatic weapon and a grenade. He demands 500,000 euros for the passengers and also asks for trouble-free passage into Albania. Police quickly surround the bus and a life-or-death negotiation begins. The man tries to look hard but soon softens and frees all the hostages except seven. His mother arrives at the scene and pleads with her son to release them and surrender; she is played by Rajmonda Bulku. The cast includes Giannis Stankoglou, Theodora Tzimou, Laertis Vasiliou and Minas Chatzisavvas.
Nikos Patrelakis composed the score, and Highway Productions and the Greek Film Centre produced the film. Reviewers said Giannaris found a theme to rival American action films; the tension may not match Hollywood thrillers, but the dialogue reflects Greek-Albanian relations and human nature well.
