Hazal

Hazal is a 1979 Turkish drama and director Ali Özgentürk's first feature film, released theatrically in early 1981. Co-written by Özgentürk and Onat Kutlar, it was produced by Abdurrahman Keskiner, with music by Zülfü Livaneli and Arif Sağ. The 90-minute color film is set in the Mardin region of rural Turkey.

The story follows Hazal, a poor villager who, after losing her husband, is forced by custom to marry his ten-year-old brother. Their union never goes beyond a mother-son relationship, and when Hazal defies tradition by running away with Emin, a wall mason she has fallen for, the lovers are condemned to death so the village's honor can be cleansed. Türkân Şoray, Talat Bulut and Meral Çetinkaya star. The film won the Grand Prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, while Çetinkaya received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 18th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.
