Game of Thrones

TV Series · 2011–2019 · 3 people

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created Game of Thrones for HBO, an American fantasy drama series. Its title comes from the first book of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, and it was the first time those novels were brought to television. It ran from 17 April 2011 to 19 May 2019, for eight seasons and 73 episodes. The series drew record viewership on HBO, was shown in 173 countries in 2015 and won 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, a record for a drama.

Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, it follows three main arcs: noble houses contending for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, Daenerys Targaryen, last heir of the deposed dynasty, plotting her return from exile, and the Night's Watch defending the realm against threats from the north. Kit Harington plays Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys and Peter Dinklage plays Tyrion Lannister, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe; Sean Bean, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey and Sophie Turner also appear.

Filming took place at Belfast studios and in Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco and Spain, with music by Ramin Djawadi. Critics objected to nudity and violence, and the short final season drew backlash. The prequels House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms followed in 2022 and 2026.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Keeping a cast this large afloat across eight seasons and 73 episodes is no small feat. The fight for the Iron Throne, Daenerys's road through Essos and the Night's Watch in the north: the way those three strands draw closer and ratchet up the tension is the show's great strength. Peter Dinklage's Tyrion brings a sharp wit to every scene, and Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke carry their own stories with ease. To be honest, though, the final season is too short and rushed to tie up character arcs built over years. Even so, the early seasons are the kind you binge several episodes at a sitting.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Benioff and Weiss's biggest achievement is splitting George R. R. Martin's many-layered novels into three parallel narrative lines and cross-cutting them in balance season after season. The mix of Belfast studios with real locations such as Croatia, Iceland and Morocco gives television an unusual scale and texture, and Ramin Djawadi's score lends the world thematic unity. That said, I don't think the criticism is unfair that the nudity and violence sometimes become spectacle rather than serving the story. The real structural problem is the ending: in a shortened final season, conflicts built up over years are hurriedly summarised instead of being earned scene by scene. Still, a drama-record 59 Emmys shows the ambition largely paid off.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This is not a show for the family living room. The criticism it drew for nudity and violence is well founded; some scenes can feel heavy even for adults. I wouldn't put it on with children, let alone with grandparents in the room. The story is gripping and the acting strong, but this is one for adults to watch on their own. If teenagers want to see it, an adult should take a look first.
