Bozkır Arslanı Celaleddin

I am Jalaliddin (Bozkır Arslanı Celaleddin)

TV Series · 2021–2023 · 5 people

A historical Turkish-Uzbek television series, Bozkır Arslanı Celaleddin goes by Mendirman Jaloliddin in Uzbek, meaning "I am Jaloliddin". Blending war, action and drama, it is based on the life of Jalal al-Din Mangburni, the last ruler of the Khwarazmian state. Mehmet Bozdağ's company Bozdağ Film made it with the Uzbek Ministry of Culture and Sports, with Metin Günay directing. It was shot in Türkiye and Uzbekistan, episodes running about 90 minutes.

The story follows Jalal al-Din as he faces Genghis Khan's Mongols, beats them at the Battle of Parwan, and then defends his empire until his death. Turkish actor Emre Kıvılcım plays the lead, with Turkish and Uzbek performers such as Cemal Hünal, Sezgin Erdemir, Feruza Normatova and Saida Rametova. Javohir Zokirov, Gülenay Kalkan and Ra'no Shodiyeva are also listed.

The first episode aired in Uzbek on Milliy TV in Uzbekistan on 14 February 2021. In Türkiye it began on ATV on 21 May 2021 and reached its season finale with episode seven on 2 July 2021. The first season ended in Uzbekistan on 9 May 2021. Season two, 17 episodes (14 to 30), aired on Zo'r TV in 2022 and 2023, and the series ended on 16 July 2023. The series also drew viewers in Pakistan and was re-run on tabii.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A ruler holding out against Genghis Khan's Mongols, a victory like the Battle of Parwan, and a story full of war and action: on paper it's exactly what I'm after. Episodes of around 90 minutes leave plenty of room for battle scenes, and Emre Kıvılcım makes a solid leader in the title role. But with episodes that long, the pace can sag in the dialogue-heavy stretches. Worth it for the battles.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Following Jalal al-Din across two seasons and 30 episodes is a satisfying ride for fans of historical drama. The viewing history is a bit messy, though: in Türkiye the first season reached its finale on ATV with episode seven, while season two aired on Zo'r TV in Uzbekistan. That makes the re-run on tabii feel like a second chance for anyone who missed out. Having Turkish and Uzbek actors together creates an interesting chemistry, and Emre Kıvılcım carries the show. The 90-minute episodes, however, can drag in the middle stretches.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The series tells of the resistance of Jalal al-Din Mangburni, the last ruler of the Khwarazmian state, against the Mongol invasion, and it stands out as a Turkish-Uzbek partnership. Bozdağ Film working with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Culture and Sports can be read as an effort to build a shared historical memory between Central Asia and Türkiye. Its popularity in Pakistan as well shows how widely this figure resonates. As so often with historical drama, though, it is worth remembering that the fictional additions made for drama and action are not the same as the historical record; this is a heroic saga, not a history lesson.
