Michael Mendl — Biography
Michael Mendl is one of the most sought-after character actors in German film and television. Born Michael Sandrock, he has appeared in more than a hundred productions since 1975 and is best known internationally as General Weidling in Downfall (2004), the film about Hitler's last days. He is still active on screen.
Most of Mendl's awards come from his screen work: he won the Bavarian Film Award for best supporting actor for 14 Days to Life and the Golden Camera for best German actor for In the Shadow of Power (2004). He appeared in various episodes of Tatort (Brandwunden, Schattenlos) and in series such as Der Alte, Siska, Donna Leon and Das Traumhotel. In cinema his credits include Papa Giovanni (2002), the Oscar-winning Nowhere in Africa and Barefoot (2005).
His performance opposite the Austrian actress Christiane Hörbiger in the television drama Mathilde liebt (2005) was especially praised. He won the Jupiter Award for best German television actor in 2009 for The Visit and also holds the Askania Award. He has done voice and dubbing work as well.
