Ermal Kurtoğlu — Biography
Born on February 12, 1980 in Korçë, Albania, Ermal Kurtoğlu — known in Albania as Ermal Kuqo — took up basketball at the age of eight; his father and uncle were both notable figures in Albanian basketball, with his uncle becoming the country's first player to move abroad. He also played football until age twelve before committing fully to basketball.
He moved to Turkey in 2001 and spent two seasons at Fenerbahçe before obtaining Turkish citizenship with the backing of the Turkish basketball federation, adopting the surname Kurtoğlu, and transferring to Efes Pilsen in 2003. A two-year deal with Spain's Pamesa Valencia in 2008 was cut short when he returned to Efes Pilsen for the 2009-10 season; he later played for Galatasaray (2010-11), Efes Pilsen again (2011-12), Banvit (2013) and Darüşşafaka (2014), using both the Kuqo and Kurtoğlu surnames in competition. He represented Turkey's national team from 2004 to 2010 and then switched to his native Albania, for whom he is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player in the country's history.
Kurtoğlu retired from playing in 2016 and moved into NBA front-office work, serving as Director of International Pro Player Personnel for the Los Angeles Clippers before being named Senior Director of Minor League Operations for the New York Knicks in September 2025.
