Andrew Hughes — Biography

Andrew Hughes was born on 16 January 1908 in the Ottoman Empire and spent most of his acting career based in Japan, working there as both an actor and a business executive. A frequent presence in Japanese cinema, he is best remembered for playing Adolf Hitler as a serious villain in the 1965 Japanese comedy "The Crazy Adventure."

Over the course of his career he took on a range of roles in Japanese productions including Submarine I-57 Will Not Surrender (1959), Terror Beneath the Sea (1966), Ōgon Bat (1966), Destroy All Monsters (1968), Tidal Wave (1973), Fumō Chitai (1976), and Sayonara Jupiter (1984), and he also appeared in the Hollywood production Flight from Ashiya (1964), which was partly filmed in Japan.

Hughes died on 1 September 1996 and is remembered as one of the best-known foreign-born actors to have worked extensively in Japanese cinema.
