Yılmaz Gruda — Biography
Born Ahmet Yılmaz Gruda on 14 July 1930 in Istanbul, the actor began his career in 1956 at the Cep Tiyatrosu (Pocket Theatre). Over a career spanning more than 65 years in theatre, film and television, he appeared in over 100 productions and also wrote and directed numerous plays. As a poet he briefly aligned with the İkinci Yeni (Second New) movement before becoming, alongside Attilâ İlhan, one of the leading figures of the Mavi (Blue) movement. Through the 1960s and 70s he was a familiar face in supporting and background roles in Yeşilçam cinema, and from the 2000s onward he took on more prominent parts in Turkish television series and films.
He was for a time married to fellow Yeşilçam veteran Ayşen Gruda, and beyond acting he was recognized with various awards for his poetry and writing. Hospitalized in March 2023, Gruda died in Istanbul on 25 July 2023 at the age of 93.
