Victory

Victory is a 1996 drama film written and directed by Mark Peploe, made as a French-German-British co-production in English. It adapts Joseph Conrad's 1915 novel of the same name, with Bob and Harvey Weinstein as producers and a score by Richard Hartley. Conrad's novel had already reached the screen several times: a 1919 silent version directed by Maurice Tourneur, William Wellman's 1930 Dangerous Paradise, and a 1940 adaptation starring Fredric March and Betty Field.

The story follows Axel Heyst, who has withdrawn to an island off Indonesia after business failures; when the young musician Alma asks for his help, he carries her off to his island, but the hotel owner Schomberg's thirst for revenge draws the pair into a tragic confrontation. The cast is led by Willem Dafoe, Irène Jacob, Sam Neill and Rufus Sewell, with supporting turns from Bill Paterson, Jean Yanne, Irm Hermann and Simon Callow.
