Two Pennies Worth of Violets

Two Pennies Worth of Violets (original French title: Deux sous de violettes) is a 1951 French drama film directed by the celebrated playwright Jean Anouilh. The cast is headed by Dany Robin, Georges Baconnet and Madeleine Barbulée, with supporting performances from Henri Crémieux, Jacques Dufilho, Héléna Manson and Michel Bouquet, among others. The screenplay was written by Monelle Valentin. The picture holds a distinctive place in Anouilh's career: although he was one of France's most prominent dramatists, he stepped behind the camera on only two occasions, the other being Traveling Light in 1944. Filming took place at the Billancourt Studios in Paris, and the sets were created by art director Léon Barsacq, one of the leading production designers of French cinema. Running roughly 98 minutes, the film belongs to the post-war French studio tradition and carries the dramatic sensibility of Anouilh's stage work onto the screen.
